For those wishing to become a famous cartoonist I shall refer you to none other than Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert. Lately he’s been trying to help Scott Meyer, the creator of Basic Instructions make the leap from webcomic to newspaper comic. It’s tougher than one might think.

I myself am not immune to the allure of a contract with a syndicate. Anyone who’s spent the majority of their life toiling away at something is probably doing it to be successful. Would syndication lead to success?

My cartoons are already made within the standard newspaper format, it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to get them published. I do however worry about my soul. I don’t want to hold back on a joke just because it isn’t deemed family entertainment by a few big whigs. I do try to avoid profanity when I can, but sometimes it just feels necessary.

I remain forever torn on this issue, and if no one ever comes knocking on my door to offer me bags of cash, I’ll never have to answer it. Perhaps I shall remain patiently under the radar through indecision.

Basic Instructions is pretty good; almost as good as WTTF. There were a few strips that made me laugh hard enough to cry. That said, going syndicated often kills the originality and creative licence in great strips. Only the best of the best can keep a comic fresh after so many years….

I bet you say that to all the budding cartoonists.

I think being syndicated is a thing of the past. Webcartoons are where its at because the New Paper is a dinasaur waiting to be slayed by the internet. However if someone comes with bags of cash you should take it. Don’t begrudge your own success.

You’re very welcome Anish, the painting is the first in a series so if I should happen to get really big, it should be worth something. You’ll have to outlive me though, artists don’t get famous until their dead.
