Believing in Love

Not being able to afford internet after moving to an apartment that doesn’t have holes in the wall and a broken window, I am forced to make major updates at the coffee shop two houses down. It’s a nice little boutique shop with a book store attached (neither of which are a large corporate entity).

However, it is overrun with people on laptops, much like mine. Actually, they’re much nicer laptops than mine, which they apparently use for no more than checking their e-mail, and opening the occasional word document. I would dig a months worth of ditches for the computers these people carry around.

They don’t seem to stay that long either. A typical work session for me is about an hour, which is time enough to devour a cookie and a cup of tea. In this time I’ll see someone sit down, set up their laptop, open their word documents with their important looking thesis on them, and begin to stare at people walking in. They’ll stare for about twenty minutes before they call someone on their cell phone, presumably looking for a place to hang out and play video games.

To be fair, there are a few that do actual work. You can recognize them as the people behind a barricade of books that have been there before you get there, and will be there after you leave. Baristas hate them.

I met my wife at a coffee shop, and spent the next six months at the bar watching her work while I dreamed up cartoon ideas. I always offered to help clean the place up after hours so no one got mad at me being there all the time. None of the cartoons were any good, but I still consider those some of my best months.

Who came up with the word “Barista” anyway. Sounds like some sort of Cuban leader overthrown by Fidel Castro in 1959. As for old computers, I’m still blazin with my circa 1999 Mac, while I try to convince the girlfriend to buy a really hot new MacBook… When I marry her maybe i will get to use it!

Ross, Barista does sound kind of Cuban. It’s not even in the spell checker, which makes me wonder if it’s really even a word. My wife’s got some ’splaining to do. Those MacBooks are pretty hot, watch out, she might suspect you’ve got a “thing” for it. Mine’s got a dell so she never has to worry about any torrid affairs with it.

Even hotter are those alienwares but damn are they expensive, if you’re going for a laptop then that’s cool, but I just found out you can save close to six grand if you build a workstation yourself.

dual xeon for $3,574 say what? If you’re into 3d animation watch out for the SLI systems, they say they’re good, but they don’t offer any more speed than a good single graphics card. Apparently they’re more for gaming.

I’m kind of a gear head when it comes to computing power, or really more of a dreamer.
