WTTF: The Cartoons of Jeremy Hitchcock
The Olympic Opening Ceremonies

The Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Having the Olympic games in a messed up place like China is especially sickening, but knowing the history of the games, it is not all that surprising. I happen to like Tibet and Buddhist monks, but they seem to be going the way of some of my other faves (native Americans, Australian aborigines, and other tribal communities).

I’m going to do the best I can not to funnel my money or attention to anyone that made this happen. It’s a daily effort, just like AA.

In the spirit of the olympics I have made a shirt for you to vote on at woot:

  1. Panda says:

Aborigine birth rates are on the rise in Australia actually..

  2. Dominic says:

I’m very much of the “Keep politics out of the Games” school, but since China have been making this into a display of their country it’s little more than politics to me already. A shame, a bloody shame.

  3. Jeremy says:

Panda, glad to hear the good old Aborigines are gettin’ busy. I hope they’re also not dying as much and living a quality life.

Dom, a shame it is. I’d also like to keep corporate interests out of the game (prolly why it’s in China in the first place), but I know that’s not happening anytime soon.

  4. Stephanie says:

Whats interesting about corporate interests and the Olympics. Spectators as well as competitors cannot wear or display logos of non-Olympic sponsors even if they are sponsoring an athlete.

  5. Jess says:

Jeremy you are a genius I wish I could be more like you.

by the way, show steph’s face, she’s beautiful and people would buy more t-shirts if they thought buying T-shirts would make them that pretty!

  6. Jess says:

and by show her face I meant a more “full” view, not a profile

  7. Stephanie says:

That picture was taken really early in the morning before I went to work. Next time we’ll do it like we mean it and you can get some full frontal face action.

  8. Cheodo says:

I saw somewhere that the Chinese are putting up brick walls around some of their poorer housing in order to keep them from public(international…) view. Maybe they might even put in little doors, so they can get out, but we can only hope for so much…

  9. Stephanie says:

Those crazy Chinese are very good at putting up walls.

  10. Blake says:

The amount of xenophobia in here is sickening.

Try actually going to China (or here’s an idea, Tibet!) before jumping on another bandwagon to a cause you’re too easy to pass judgement on.

  11. Jeremy says:

enlighten us here Blake, I assume you’ve been there. Some of us can not afford to make extensive travels.

  12. [...] are just as xenophobic as us? I was recently called a xenophobe by a reader named Bake over at this cartoon, and it made me wonder if I was. I’d like to think I’m a little more thoughtful than [...]

  13. Grumpy says:

First an accusation nationalist pride in hosting Olympics, then of xenophobia, neither supported by fact or rational argument.

Kind of proves the point: Anonymity + Audience = Asshole

  14. Jerry w says:

Did you know that in China, Chinese food is just called “food”?

After a few meals there, I was the one that introduced “pull my finger” to China, breaking new ground and wind at the same time.
